Is a 3 day schedule possible in vet med?
Few employees enjoy a 4 day schedule.
Immensely fewer have a 3 day schedule.
3 days???
Justin Lindsey, a Miami Chick-fil-A restaurant owner came up with this revolutionary idea: a 40-hour week condensed in 3 days, with 4 days off each week.
The owner had 3 goals in mind: reducing burnout, increasing retention and offering consistency.
One group of employees works Monday through Wednesday, and the other works Thursday through Saturday (recall, Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays). The groups alternate for the sake of fairness.
At first, employees needed time to be convinced. Convinced that it was legit. Convinced that they wouldn’t be on call during their time off. Convinced that they would still get full benefits.
Now, they love the concept. They can plan their family life, their vacation or their college schedule.
They also love the consistency. Before, their schedule would change all the time: different days, different shifts, different durations…
To improve communication between the 2 groups, important information is shared about staffing issues, broken equipment etc.
Of course, the tradeoff for this cushy schedule is longer days. A 13 to 14 hour workday is not for everyone.
Other Chick-fil-A owners are reportedly interested in the concept.
Job seekers are interested as well: in one week, almost 430 applications were submitted to fill one single position!
Unexpected benefits of the strategy include: much higher retention, finding out weaker employees and revealing talent.
Fun fact: Justin Lindsey’s restaurant generates more than twice as much as the average Chick-fil-A franchise.
Do you think it’s a coincidence?
