A tip worth half a million dollars

Reading Blogs From Chronos

In 1918, Charles Schwab wrote Ivy Lee a check for half a million dollars (in today’s dollars).

Why?

To thank him for a simple piece of advice you can get today for free by reading below!

Schwab, the founder of Bethlehem Steel, hired Lee, a publicity expert and the founder of modern public relations.

The steel magnate was constantly searching for new ways to increase his managers’ productivity. He asked Lee for advice.

Lee asked to spend 15 minutes with each one of his executives to analyze what they did.

When he was done, here is the advice he gave the managers and Mr. Schwab:

1. Each evening, write the 6 most important things you need to get done tomorrow.

2. Prioritize that list from 1 through 6.

3. Tomorrow, start working on task #1 and nothing else. Don’t even think about the other tasks until you’re done.

4. When you are finished with #1, move on to #2 with the same focus.

5. Keep going down your list.

6. At the end of the day, choose your top 6 for tomorrow, which should include any of the tasks you haven’t completed today.

Simple, right?

Why does it work so well?

. The secret is to follow the entire advice: “Start working on task #1 and nothing else.”

Nothing else means no Facebooking. No meetings. No Slack-ing. No texting. No multitasking. No emailing. No news. No Instagraming. No YouTubing. No distractions.

. When you plan your day the night before, you eliminate decision fatigue. You save your energy to do the work. You wake up knowing exactly what to do, rather than wasting time and mental energy deciding what to do.

. Instead of spending time each morning deciding what to do, you can start working right away. While others agonize over what to do, while checking their inbox and Twitter account, you’re already hard at work.

This classic story, and many others, led to the concept of Next Day Planning (NDP).

Do you want to boost your productivity?

Then spend 5 to 15 minutes each evening to plan your next day.

Limit yourself to 6 tasks.

You can always add more if you’re done.

If you commit to doing this every day, you will become an unstoppable goal-achieving machine.

And you will accomplish in 1 day or 1 week more than most people do in 1 month.
